Like Russell Wilson, I was never the biggest QB coming in around 5’11”. My hand size measures an NFL average 9.62″, not bad.
As I continue to post more QB grips, the debate around hand size is becoming more visible. When you research a lot of what people say, like the ESPN article here…I think they’ve got it all wrong.
Here’s a great video from ESPN talking to various NFL QB’s and where their grips came from. This is probably the best look at QB grips directly from their own mouths.
Many people seem to be correlating hand size to grip strength, thus affecting fumbles.
Here’s the truth…QB hand size is all about control of the football in our throwing motion, in any conditions.
We can all spin it great when the conditions are ideal. Although when its cold or rainy…the ball becomes really hard to control. Big hands like Russell Wilson & Brett Favre allowed them to have insane control of the ball through out their throwing motion even if the ball was wet or cold.
Bigger hands means more grip around the ball, which means more control of the ball in our motion. Trying picking up a youth sized football…you feel like a throw god with the ability to chuck that ball anywhere!
